Hi all the intrepid aviators who actually fly to a fly in!!!Biggenden is a little over 1500km, (1100 nautical miles) direct line from Ballarat according to my trusty Magellan 315 gps. I will get the charts out and start planning."Plan the flight, and fly the plan leads to less errors!!!!John, the AOPA country airstrip books are great, as is the ERSA.Hoges, maybe I will meet you on my way up, and we can hold Birdys hands from both sides!!!! I hope he has long bloody arms!!!!Do we use gps backed up by dead reckoning, or dead reckoning backed up by gps!!!!! I can never quite work out what I actually do on my major cross country flights!!!!!Aussie Paul. []www.firebirdgyros.com

Dead reckoning backed up by GPS then backed up by the sun sounds good !!!You guys flying in are keen !! I dont mind doing 10 hours mustering but in a straight line.....no way !! Particularly if there's a head wind !!!Brian

For frequent flyer points read ´leave pass´. Holding hands might have to start about Birdsville. Where was Birdsville again?Maybe I could just meet you the other side of the Strzelecki (Biggenden). How much fuel do your machines burn Birdy/Paul?A little bit more planning is required on my part yet though but it would be a good challenge. Is this a chance to raise money for a good cause on the way? Just a thought.Hoges

Guys, my fuel capacity will be 90 liters, so about the same as the Raf with their 87 liters. I reckon the fuel burn will be around the 20 liters/hour, and I hope a cruise speed somewhere between 60 and 70 kts. Now ground speed, and Brians head wind!!!!! Brian, flying in a strght line is still better than driving all over the place, but to each their own enjoyment.[8D]I don't mind if I am getting a mile a minute, it is when you get down to 30 kts it becomes a bit of a pain!!!![V]I will go up on the inland side of the mountains, BUT will have to find the best spot to cross to the ocean side, so some local knowledge would be appreciated.Aussie Paul. Paul,If you come up via Warwick then thru Cuninghams Gap its the best way for tiger country, done that trip a few times. This way we could refuel you at YCAB for the last leg to Biggenden.

I recon a streight line will be a welcome change Brian, specialy over sum dirt i never seen yet.I thought you were startn ere Hoges, coulda dun sum muster'n for a coupla days before we left.Havn't tested it yet for fuel burn Hoges, but its bout 15/18 lph. will have to leave ere with bout 130 liters to get across the simpson.[ alow'n for the headwind]If anyone is serious bout cumn with me over the desert but can't make it coz its too far on one fuel stop, i can arrange for sum fuel to be dumped out at lake caroline,. That'd make the longest hop between fuels only bout 300 km.Good chance to raise money??? i dout it, i recon its a good way to burn it tho.Ground speed of 60/70k Paul?? Is that gps varified or just an over calibrated ASI number?? And youd wana do better n a mile a minute if you wana get across the desert on one tank."BUT will have to find the best spot to cross to the ocean side"Wots this????????????????? sumthn thats got Paul windy? On one told me bout this.[ and i'm not worried bout tigers Murry, its the jets I gota look out for].Ignorance is bliss............but only till you realise you were. You can always get the answer you want, if you ask enough experts.

Ground speed of 60/70k Paul?? Birdy, I said cruise speed, that usually means airspeed Is that gps varified or just an over calibrated ASI number?? Birdy, hopefully the anticipated cruise speed of Firebird Mk1. And youd wana do better n a mile a minute if you wana get across the desert on one tank. What desert, I aint going over no desert!!! If I have to put some gerries in with a transfere pump so be it. I have done a few major cross countries Birdy. Good preparation with alternates works pretty good."BUT will have to find the best spot to cross to the ocean side"Wots this????????????????? sumthn thats got Paul windy? A lot of things get me windy Birdy, baked beans for one!!! [^] On one told me bout this.[ and i'm not worried bout tigers Murry, its the jets I gota look out for].I had better get the maps out and have a serious look at this. Birdy telling me I have to go over a desert. Geez, I must have the map upside down!!!![:0]Aussie Paul. []

Paul, I had some headwinds back last year and the GPS said groundspeed 40 K's an hour, try that for 4 hours and you get mighty sick at watching the same scenery .It will be very interesting scenery Birdy and I would love to be able to catch up and fly the last leg or two with you guys but I reckon we will be doing that rounding up thing again !! Brian
