Paul, Don't fly out of Warwick if there's a strong south wester. Rotor wave effects east of range can be deadly.Ted

I hope all you marathon fliers have fresh batteries in your ELT, especially you Birdy, not nice if that lake in the Simpson is a bit soggy, have you thought of using a transfer pump and learning to pee in a bottle so you don't have to land?Ross, you'd better take a couple of spare batteries with you!John EvansThink logically and do things well, think laterally and do things better.

Two litres should be enough! But you need to practice, it's a bit of an art!Sorry about the acronyms. ELT is the emergency locator transmitter, also called an EPIRB, the old 121.5 MHz ones are still OK, but will soon be replaced by a different frequency, which actually transmits your GPS position and who you are! They transmit on 406.025MHx and at Bias Boating will set you back $1695.00. You can still get the older technology for around $200.AOPA is the Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association, heavily orientated toward GA, but genertally acting as a watchdog to keep the bureaucrats honest.VNC stands for Visual Navigation Chart, the full set has yet to be published, but wuth a scale of 1:500,000 it has twice the detail of a WAC. I have been known to take the credit for the VNC series, I got pretty annoyed at a "Safety Seminar" a few years ago when some "expert" was showing us how to navigate and avoid the PRDs {Prohibited, Restricted and Danger zones} he ran out of time just when he got to the dificult bit where he flew off the edge of the VTC [Visual Terminal Chart]. The PRDs were on yet another chart, which had no ground fearures on it so you could relate it to the WAC. I put in a written question pointing out the stupidty of the situation. It was quite a few months before they rang me to answer the question, he started rabbiting on about how we were supposed to look the PRDs coordinates up in the ERSA and laboriously plot them on our WACs. I listened to him for a while and then said "you're Bull****ting me aren't you" there was a stunned silence and he then said "yes"!! So I told him the stuff we had was totally inadequate, and they'd better do something about it. You could have knocked me down with a feaher when he rang me a few months later to tell me the VNCs would be out soon. Unfortunately the series is still far from complete. ERSA is something you really shouldn't leave home without, it stands for En Route Supplement Australia, it contains information you need to safely commit cross country aviation.Once you have all the needed documentation on board your safety will be greatly enhanced, as it is highly unlikely you will be able to get off the ground[}]John EvansThink logically and do things well, think laterally and do things better.

JohnI hadn't thought of spare ELT batteries. So I gather I will need to transcribe the prohibited and dander areas onto a WAC for the areas not covered by a VNC.I thought ERSA may be useful for lighting the campfire at night if I use the redundant pages. As for that pee bottle , I hesitate to say it, but I did an experiment on the weekend that involved a using a plastic bladder, a tube some other stuff. Yes it was sucessful, but it's a bad sensation when you feel the warmth from the tube against your leg. I hate to admit it but further testing is required. May also investigate any other products already on the market. Ross B

Yeah Ross, you'll need to do lots of practice, you probably have deeply embedded memories going back to when you wore nappies! There is some stuff called Penrose tubing used on old fellows Old Fellows, its a bit like wearing a condom all the time, they tend to leak and slip off. You could always get catheterised[:0]Way back when an early Honda 4 won an endurance race by not stopping for 6 hours the rider actually wore a certain sort of absorbent pad. He walked a bit funny when he got off! There are now incontinence pants which are apparently very absorbant.I don't think you'll need to do too much transcribing now as the VTCs and VNCs have got things pretty well covered.Once you've mastered the art of peeing sitting down and in flight you'll have to teach yourself not to do it in the wrong setting, good luck.[}]John EvansThink logically and do things well, think laterally and do things better.

I would advise anyone thinking of ELT to go for the later technology [406 frquency] as its far more precise in pinpointing the spot whereas 121.1 is pretty ordinary. This advice is from personal experience!!! If anyone was injured, time in finding you is crucial. Money saved in this instance is not relevant !!Brian

Hmmmm............ .[?]I already got an EPERB thingy, I'll have me sat phone with me and i reckon i'll take Harry too........... just in case.[}]PS your PS Muz, I got a spare EJ22 too, can't give the %$^&* thing away[!].[a comlpeat RAF unit.]As for the pee'n, i'm not real keen on stickn me head in a bottle[], or put'n a bag over it[B)], so i recon i'll just tie it to the mains strut, so's it don't go through the prop[].Ignorance is bliss............but only till you realise you were. You can always get the answer you want, if you ask enough experts.

Yes Brian I am sure you are right about the new stuff being better, but I can assure you the old stuff still works fairly well.A few years ago I left mine with the impact switch armed while I trailered the gyro home. While showering and getting ready for the arrival of our lunchtime christmas party guests I could hear a heavy helicopter coming and going overhead.Just after we had settled down to our meal Llewella answered the front door to find a bloke pointing a strange looking antenna at her and demanding to see our boat, smart girl, she figured it had something to do with me!It seems they had been tracking me all the way from Singlton, in fact they thought they had three crashed aircraft! So the old technology will find you, but it will take longer.John EvansThink logically and do things well, think laterally and do things better.
