Could be Dave you had a little forward speed where the resultant airflow combined with the air flowing past your HS from your vertical sink causing a re-direction past the HS to blanket and make your rudder ineffective. One word of caution is that I know and am aware of gyro pilots who have crashed from performing the very same manouvre. I have done my share of sinks but now feel our aircraft are so responsive and manouverable in normal flight that why put yourself under the pump trying out this sort of thing.PeteBairnsdale,Vic.

Pete,Though I've never done this nor had to do this it is something I think should be learnt. We discussed some time back the prospect of having to do a vertical descent if you, say, had to drop out of a zero visibility situation like flying into a cloud, avoidable but possible. If you didn't rehearse the operation then you would not know what to do if you absolutely had to do it, for what ever reason. Not practicing it is a danger of itself.Cheers,Nicholas TomlinAlarmist - www.alarmist.com.au - we scare for you

Be mindful Nick that our aircraft are not weight-shift and NOT self-centering under the rotors. If you have any experience at flying blind you will well appreciate it is only a few seconds before your senses are completely confused and you would then not know if the gyro was commencing a steep bank or even inverting itself. Vertical sinks would be as dangerous as normal descents under those conditions. I believe Nick you are preparing for a situation you will not find yourself in. We fly VFR only with a minimum of 5ks visibility and clear of cloud. If you break those conditions and find yourself in low visibility conditions, simply reduce power and descend whilst in normal flight keeping the ground in sight.Experience here and around the world has shown vertical sinks and flat spins to be a unpredictable manoeuvre that can look and feel great but which has wiped out many a good gyro.PeteBairnsdale,Vic.

There was a time that I had to drop through cloud to find my way home. I had been flying around north of Townsville up on the Highrange area and as I came back to the coast over the excarpment there was solid cloud right out to over the water. In that case my choice was to land in the trees that I was flying over or drop through the clouds, which I did easly and safely. No big deal if you watch what you are doing.Graeme.

The danger you have to be aware of in VDs is reversed airflow.I won't go into the details of wot happens, but you have to be alert, and its not easy to feel reversed airflow, and your ASI or yaw string won't tell you either.Spining or not, reversed airflow is wot destroys gyros, if the pilot isn't aware of it, and dosen't know how to respond.Ignorance is bliss............but only till you realise you were.birdy, here.
