  • Tall tail offset

G"day gentsShould a tall tail be slightly offset to counteract torque i.e. when the pedals are level, front wheel straight ahead, should a bit of rudder offset left or right be built in?

dead straight on a tall tail
If you aim for nothing, you'll hit it every time

On my last gyro (not a tall tail) the vertical stab. was offset.

Torque roll and the P facter are two different forces.Tall tails counter the torque best.

I get a bit confused since the accident, but I reckon it is Tall tails for P factor, and offset rotor for torque roll.Aussie Paul.

Yeah, I read the other post on tall tails and the difference of opinions - some hate em some love em - me I"m just trying to get an old gyro re registered and doin what I"m told - get rid of the old tail (not enough area on h.stab) and get a new one and this one came up.

Head offset and HS countering are just two ways of correcting the same thing, torque roll.Nuthn to do with P factor.

Okay, so what is P effect/factor birdy. There seems to be some divergence of opinion as to the need to compensate for it. To me, the corkscrew airflow off the prop hitting the tail would help counteract torque, well on a tractor fixed wing anyway as it would act on the fuselage and wings as well.

I thought P factor was due to the prop slipstream corkscrewing and hitting the tail more on one side than the other. More noticeable in fixed wings where the tail feathers are much further away from the prop.Aussie Paul.

Me too but for fix wing crew it means something different (see my previous post here).

The construction requirements direct you on how to build your gyro, not TAs.I"ve also heard of people rebuilding airframes to satisfy their local TA.
