What you say is true Murray. The general population will only hear of the gyro death and the usual assumption could be made that gyros are dangerous. So much hard work has been put in by ASRA and other's getting gyros accepted by the general community. Part of the sucess of all the hard work is instantly destroyed when someone steps outside the support structure that dual training and gyro registration provides. So sad at a needless loss of a precious life !!!BrianPooncarie NSW

Murray,Having been one of the early self taught pilots, approx three decades ago (there were no instructors back then) and having smashed my self up and been one that actually survived, I agree with you 100% I have also seen people die that would just not listen, I have also been there with the TV stations camera's - with the Department of Air investigators - and with the parents and wives of the deceased, so I am also angry with the attitude of some people.Pete Barsden

I person has died. After an appropriate amount of time, to de-identify an accident and use it as an example is educational. Mr Tomlin's reply was, I feel, at best, insensitive. Some other replies were perhaps unnecissary. Imagine how the man's family may be feeling! The "soap box" can wait for another day.Daryl Patterson

Daryl, this topic is not a "soap box" ( a poor description). The posts were made by concerned gyro pilots , obviously who do care about how the family must feel as we all have families that are involved one way or another with our chosen sport. Thats the point exactly - if you care for your family ( & I'm not saying this guy didnt ) it is your responsibility to make it as safe as possible by the way of proper training & machine inspection/rego to save everyone concerned some grief. What is the 'appropriate' amount of time to discuss an incident ? ASAP , within the bounds of what information ( no presumption ) is available , as it may just well save another pilot from the same mistake. I don't think this is being insensitive , as you described Nick. It is extremly frustrating & annoying at the senseless waste of life that may have been prevented with a little planning & asking for help.
