Greg,On the urethane.. it tends to do what you said if you inject too much of it at once. It expands up to 3 x its injected volume but some people insist on stuffing it in until it is full in the unexpanded state and love to watch it ooooozing out.. then wonder why it hasn"t gone off, ie, that is how it stays liquid in the aerosol can if that is what you use.I think you"ll find if you go "light on", it will be good for the job. It also sets better under aerobic [vented] conditions as opposed to anerobic [enclosed] conditions - the opposite of polyester resin.Cheers,Nick.
G"Day Nick,Good info, appreciated. I will confer with Allan, this week and Larry. The tail I bought back from the US last year had the waves in the top of the HS skin, as you say, too much injected, removed soon after from mould, because it had to be crated up for travelling the next day. So lack of time left insitu in mould and too much gunk. Thanks again.Cheers,Mitch
Managed some time on the tail today.Glassed the leading edges and sanded back. Found taping the edges allowed for being a tad messy. Have some of this foam board stuff to cut-in to the base of the tail and bogging in. Then sand back the whole tail and paint. Hmm! Might just prime and then field test.I recollect the US tails Kevlar/Composite are comming in around 12.5 lbs to this point and ours weighs in at 13.2 lbs.So to this point the gelcoated
G"Day Gents,Tail came in at 15 lbs....6.8 kgsThe old AirCommand Tail was 13.5 lbs and was significantly smaller.Looks like there is about 1 degree neg incidence built in, using the 1 in 60 rule.Tall tails will lay less than 28 lbs...less than 13 kgsCheers,Mitch.
Mass Balamce Tube installed.Instruments wired up and live.Next...engine test, ascertain if there was any damage.Spoke to Rob.....Blades are manufactured and tested on his two place gyke. Dave and Rob will test on a lighter machine before transporting. Not far off now. ;D ;D ;D ;DMitch
G"Day Gents,Ended up injecting some foam, whilst tail was locked and clamped into the moulds.I started about 3pm yesterday and by 9.30 pm I was taking the tail out. When I injected the foam, I did so by first aiming the tube/nozzle to the tips of the wings, as this area filled, I directed the foam into the body of the wings back towards the middle.I kept cleaning out the two filler holes, one on each side under neath the HS. As it foamed up I cleaned it out, trying to allow the air at it, as much as possible.Last night I thought I had stuffed it!
