"You seem to be saying that the machines are as stable as the pilots flying them"Spoton Gavin.Even the most stable machine is a death machine if the pilot is unstable.Training is the most critical eliment in gyro safty/stability,no matter wot the machines configuration.Everything else we designe into or bolt onto our machines will only stablise the machine, not the pilot.I leart to fly in an unstable, underpowerd heap of****.I'v been fly'n an unstable overpowered heap of**** for over 2000 hours,in less than faverable conditions and am still alive.Good training has been my blessing.Merry Xmas all.Ignorance is bliss............but only till you realise you were.

Birdy,I, like many others Learnt to fly unstable gyro's without the luxury of two seat training and most of the blokes I started flying with are still alive. But the older I get the more lazy I get and I like to just sit there and not have to constantly fly, correct, adjust the thing. You can do that with a tru CLT machine.Im sure Waddles will let you take his Butterfly for a spin at the Nats,It will be interesting to see what you think.M Barker

quote:Originally posted by Whitelighter69Murray is right. Even though cars are safer with disc brakes you can still buy a car with drum brakes (which will fade to nothing coming down the blue mountains with "inexperienced use").Helicopters can be gyro controlled so that they can fly without constant control input. In the former, the car is safe enough if driven within its parameters, and in the latter, the standard helicopter is controllable enough with the correct training.Tim McClure

While everyone is emphasizing the importance of good training, let's not forget the part to be played by the trainee. People come in various 'shapes and sizes' so far as trainability is concerned. Training is also very much an interaction between two different, and sometimes incompatable personalities. It seems we have an ongoing problem as expressed by Whitelighter 69, in that there is often some incredulity on the part of experienced flyers from other disciplines, who feel their experience qualifies them for our 'simple' machines. Some seem to be able to grasp what is required quickly without too much tendency to revert to their previous responses whereas others, particularly those who regard themselves as 'proper pilots' will make improper respnses under stress.Remember over 60% of accidents are caused by Human Factors.I believe we have a major problem in the limited number of Instructors available, too many of those who are active do not seem to wish to have others, who will then be able to provide the variety for a healthy instuctional scene, enter the field and 'compete' with them.John EvansThe law of Inverse Relevance: the less you intend to do about something, the more you have to keep talking about it.

merry xmas all Please let me say there should not be any confusion at all if you have a high thrust line machine and if you are a low hour pilotlike me you should get some one like Paul to test fly it. I did this with my two seater Paul lowered the prop for me and when I got my machine home I could not beleive how much Paul inproved the gyro. I have much more confidence in the machine as it feels really stable.w drewery
