Hi Ozy Woz, I think you will find that the 5 minute freestyle flying display is no longer part of the Nationals - people were pushing themselves too much in front of a crowd - and insurance worries being the main reasons. Solve the insurance problems and you will help a lot of people!! I thought it was flour bombing, not flower bombing!!! Just a slip of the fingers I know! No problem with flour bombing or carrier deck landings though.LlewellaThe law of Inverse Relevance: the less you intend to do about something, the more you have to keep talking about it.

Anybody heard of a row of star pickits or similar, with ropes attached as the barrier not to be crossed. And the public are well warned if they trespass, the flying displays will be terminated. And as well, there will be numerious gyro pilots and others who can police this barrier as the flying display is on. Fair go, there are many well skilled flyers, who will give a damn good demo to the uninitiated of our world of gyros.Dropping a flour bomb etc, hey, we can do better than that[}] anyway thats my 2 bobs worth......RussRDC

John......I'm all for flower bombing etc etc, but I think a sequence of skilled flying etc etc is extemely important, too important not to have.It would be extremely benificial not only to just onlookers, but perhaps more importantly, it will help budding gyro pilots see just what can be achieved safely etc, rather than hear about manouvers, and try to replicate them from stories etc. Many , many years back I was a budding pilot, who did exactly what I don't want to see happen, that is having a go at aero's without knowing a bloody thing about how to etc, mate, did I have some close calls[xx(] Back in those days an incident was not front page news as it would be now. So let's show the lads a few tricks or two, and perhaps an evening class on the whyfors, howdoos etc[]RDC

Ere ere!!!I'm go'n to Cooma on an educational holiday, so the more pilots that turn up with something to show the better. Just don't make a comp outa it,that way theres no pressure.....,or liability.Last year was definately an education for me.I'm not go'n all that way to drink coffee and hear dribble.Ignorance is bliss............but only till you realise you were.Ingratitude stinks.......be generous carefully.

Just as there were handling demonstrations at Alice, so there will be at Cooma. In the past there have been some anxious moments when some contestants have tried a little too hard. We've had enough difficulty with last minute insurance hitches to risk our ability to hold the Nationals at all! We were all impressed by demos by Birdy and others whose activities were sanctioned by the organisers, but irresponsible flying can't be tolerated.John EvansThink logically and do things well, think laterally and do things better.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm getin the feelin that some peoples within ASRA, wish to see all gyros only doing nice gentle circuits etc etc.[:I]Anything like vertical dropouts, whip turns within the length of your blades,60......90 degree turns, vertical climbouts with variations, etc etc, all of which are SAFE...SAFE...SAFE when done properly, are considered too extreme, bad image etc etc. Well I can tell you they are not extreme or dangerous, it is very satisfying as a pilot when you do these things ,and do them well.Your worst critic is yourself, cos you now when it was done rite,or it could have bin dun beta. A LOT of pilots wish to achieve these skills, and techin yurself is frawt with danger. They know it can be done....so let's show em properly. Fly Safe always.........Russ[]RDC

John.....a previous posting said that 5min flying displays were not on at cooma, I disagree as you can see. However I totally agree with you that irresponsible flying is not to be tolerated EVER. Show them how it's done and explain how it's done. Send them home away from all the limelite to lern to do it, coz they will be informed pilots then trying it out[]RDC

I quote from John's recent response "Just as there were handling demonstrations at Alice, so there will be at Cooma...... We were all impressed by demos by Birdy and others whose activities were sanctioned by the organisers........."Now I quote from Russell's response "I hope I'm wrong, but I'm getin the feelin that some peoples within ASRA, wish to see all gyros only doing nice gentle circuits etc etc"Russell, maybe you should name who you are referring to? I don't know anyone on the Board who feels the way you are insinuating. As I said in a previous post, if you can sort out the Insurance problems in this country, you will go a long way to freeing up a lot of activities, including Gyro flying. The authorised demonstrations at Bond Springs were brilliant; they showed what can be safely done in a gyro, and people vould ask questions face to face of the pilots afterwards. There will be authorised demonstrations from invited pilots, but not the 5 minute competition display that used to be held. If you hadn't chickened out in coming to Cooma, you may well have been one of the invited demonstraters, who could teach the novices what Gyro flying can be all about![:X] XXLlewellaGoing the extra miles puts you miles ahead of your competition.

Lew...I am more happier now that I see your last posting (2nd last para) there will be authorised 5 min displays. The tone of previous posts was that NO free flying was to occur.[] Now as to those persons you want outed......last year I was at Alice as an observor only ( my gyro was not ready in time to bring, mods etc, being done) On several ocasasions I was spoken to by persons of ASRA, thinking I was only an onlooker, ( I never outed myself)some comments said to me were that because 1 pilot walked away, a few feet from his gyro, while the blades were winding down was extremely dangerous. Hey the guy was standing rite there absolutely guarding the danger zone while he lit a cigarette, another comment was another pilot was doing too tight a circuits.......fair go. Another was that no more than 3 machines should be circuiting at the same time...yu"ve gota be kidin I says, they can extend their legs etc etc as required, go slow, or exit the circuit. It's called management or sumthin. So what I'm saying is I feel some within ASRA are a bit over the top with airmanship etc etc. By the way I enforce safe flying always.[8D]RDC

What's this "we" business Woz, Llewella seems to be doing well enough on her own without me trying to see through the haze of a few glasses of wine to make sure I don't misunderstand you. An active airport is an airport that is still active - at the moment it is an MBZ where GA aircraft still come and go. One or two a day. Some come here for training. We only get RPT in winter. If we don't get it downgraded to a CTAF it will still be an MBZ. Simple, eh? We probably won't know till the last moment, or even afterwards. Members of the local council do not place the same importance on these things we do.Undisciplined flying is flying that does not fit in with the requirements of the MBZ or CTAF, or any dispensations from CASA that ASRA has achieved.JumpingJackFlash

Let me see if I can get a handle on this.[?] This is how I have interpreted the situation.1) The Cooma airport is a licenced airport and designated a MBZ (Mandatory Broadcast Zone). 2) To operate from a licenced airport an instrument from CASA is required. That can be covered by the organizers as the pilots agent.3) To fly in an MBZ requires an aircraft radio and a certificate to operate that radio which also must be registered.4) Now, if the airport is downgraded to a CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency)a radio is not required, but must be used if fitted.I hope that this is of some help.Aussie Paul.[8] behind the 8 ball!!www.firebirdgyros.com

Well..Well..Well....Read my first posting, way bak. I was concerned then, that this Cooma thing was possibly flawed. I had da feelin. Now look were we are, only days to go[V] The vast majority of gyro pilots would not have dispensation to fly into an MBZ, or for that matter a licensed strip. Sorry, but the preliminary checks etc etc were not done. May I even be bolder to say ASRA could share some blame here[V] Russ....[!]RDC
