  • Yep, Tim, the crank pulley was one tooth out with the cam pullies correct on their marks. I think to add to my confusion, one of the new spark plugs was playing up (Prob. due to my abusing the engine during diagnosis) as when I first fired her up No2 did not fire, so I fitted an old plug into no.2 and she ran smooth. (Think I"ll buy a optic fibre camera looky in inspection thingy for future work) This engine was original straight out of a near new automatic car and had no cover over the crank pulley. I"ve just read in the gregory"s book that the shroud is called a "crankshaft sprocket timing belt guide".

      • We had a brand new ej-25 quad cam that could not be tuned. Would get one side ok and the other not, then vicky versa. One side was a tooth out. We reckoned that it had been that way from new and they probably swapped the engine rather than fault find. Then it ended up as "cheap" gyro engine, and it sure was once we found the problem. Ran sweet. Never trust any ******* that tells you it is such and such. Double check.Aussie Paul.

        • In answer to your question disco, The engine was running fine and back-fired during a take-off at about 100 ft. at full throttle and ran crappy after that. I still had enough thrust to make a "Fairy landing" I always suspected valve timing but due to the compactness of my engine installation was unable to see the marks. Hence I"m going to buy a flexible camera thingo for future diagnosis. The laser hand held temp gauge is bloody handy too!

            • You can buy a cheap USB camera from Jaycar easy to use and has a light on the end too. Can plug into laptop and watch on the screen Very handy for places you can"t reach.

              • Yep, I"m going to buy one of those camera"s. I"m at present trying to locate a Guide plate. According to the Gates info. it"s a device to prevent "tooth jump" and I have no wish to fly until it"s installed. Repco can supply one in a kit with all the other stuff for $640 (All I want is a tin plate) I should refrain from going into Darwin town shopping on a Saturday because if you get a young store-man he"s usually suffering from a hang-over and not very helpful. I"m willing to buy the belt and tool as well but don"t need the adjuster, ect. Still searching the web.

                  • Thats just what I need Graham! I"m now trying to purchase it. Some things you just quote your visa and bingo it comes in the mail. This mob seems to want you to open an account. (A lot of shagging around just for one small part) -- This modified part could be considered a life saving part.

                    • Only engines fitted to manual transmissions have the belt guides, and jumping a cog or 2 is not uncommon when a auto engine is reinstalled into a manual car.......especially when they cough. That guide must be all but touching the belt to work. In your case....the torsional twist/flick, whatever, was caused by your prop momentum at the moment of cough, your prop inertia came into play.And........keeping a close watch on those idler pulleys is reeeel important.Good to see you,ve nailed your problem ol son. ( seasons greetings to you and family btw )

                      • G"Day Russ, You"ve been quiet for a while. Been sitting under a coconut tree? That solid alloy shroud sounds like the way to solve the problem. I"m still having problems trying to buy the bloody thing. What happened to the simple days of a fax machine and a credit card quote? If I had one to copy I"d make one. Regards to your other half and yourself.

                          • Now you know the shape, you could use dental impression silicone to take an impression of the shape. lay it on a chunk af aluminium, draw around the shape, and start grinding. Wax would be a bugger to get out. Maybe use vaseline and use "bog" like they use for repairing houses or cars?
