Got to be fair, the first box did about 3,000 hours. At 100 hours it cracked the gears and needed new bearings then had a reasonable run till 900 hours when all the insides were replaced ...again..then its been a constant front seal leaking/ replacing at anywhere from 5 hours to two hundred hours. We then started to replace the bearing [on the end of the main shaft coming from the motor] every 250 to 300 hours and that has alleviated the need to replace the gears again but the seal leaking part really got under my skin over the last 300 hours or so till I decided to put a new box on. I got a feeling that this box is going to be okay as I reckon the other box had a fault in it of some description as it was always giving problems. I know of other guys getting good hours out of C boxes and doing nothing to them in between overhauls [2.2's pushing was a RAF ]BrianPooncarie NSW

Thanks Brian for that reassurance. I intend to start using the gyro for training shortly but was wondering about the reliability of the box on the larger motors. I think further down the track if I encounter wear or problems, I will replace it with a sub4 or hirth box but prefer not to change it at this time.PeteBairnsdale,Vic.

Not a Sub4 Pete, an Autoflite made by Neil Hintz, who "was" the Sub4 designer, and is now making his own. You can be sure that the Autoflite has any improvents that Neil thought the Sub4 needed.Neil Hintz, Autoflite. nckm@wave.co.nzwww.autoflite.co.nzAussie Paul.[]www.firebirdgyros.com
