Don't put 2 tubes of green slime in your tires on the gyro... they will shake like a sun of a gun , they won't leak anymore but the out of ballance shake will drive ya battyDon't Use a 30-06 to drill a hole in plate the easy way .... it dimples realy bad ! Don't reach over and turn on the lathe with the chuck key still in the chuck, or you will find your self running for cover !Don't buff small objects in the wire wheel with your fingers....use a pare of vice grips ! , we have enough junk in orbit arround the planet ! Don't try to buff the joint unbetween the pinchers of a pare of plyers..... you may never find them again ! Don't try to drill holes in steel with Wood drills, they may look the same but they don't cut the same !Don't Force your Horse to go down a trail if he realy don't wann'a chances are he's smarter than you and knows that Rattle snake is lurkin under the scrub !Don't try to Lead the horse down the trail you might find the rattle snake first !Don't worry about Catching the horse Kill the cotton pickin Snake ! Don't worry about what the folks will say when the horse arrives home without a rider, chances are they will come lookin fer ya and give ya a ride home !Don't taxie your gyro through a swarm of bees.... the prop realy Pisses them off ! Don't enguage the pre rotator unless the engine is above idle ( if its a PTO type)Don't forget to charge your battery if your Pre-rotator is electric....Don't forget to pre-flight your gyro and remove all the cob webs, and rats nest in the frame , they play havoc with the cyclic sometimes.Don't paint your Gyro CAMOFLAUGE Green.... What not to do... a product of my last out landing...If you have an engine out or precautionary landing in a paddockon't taxi through the paddock to get to the road, you might break off your nose wheel and stuff your gyro like I did... just get out of your machine, shut it down and tie the rotor off and chill out for a while, at least ten minutes, then think about what you are going to do next, if you're down, you're down, no need to hurry now.Don't try to take off again without absolutely checking **why** you were forced to land in the first place, the engine might be running, but you don't really know how bad it might be, eg, a broken valve push rod in an EA 81 engine...Generally..A five minute flight could easily put you 10 km from home, such a trapse through the bush in the dark is a dangerous thing, it is easy to get lost and there's bunyips out there, never mind the yowies, kangawallahoppers and them drop bears. Flights on dusk are nice, but never plan to fly that close to non VMC unless you know you can get to shelter before the chill of the night sets in, however long is your flight in minutes, allow 15 times as much to get back. My last out landing after a 3 minute flight or less put me 3.4 km from the hanger, 30 minutes later I only just got back in on dark after running and walking back after such an out landing. Snakes and spiders are harder to see in the dark, and when they get pissed off they'll bite you.Never! fly without someone knowing where you are going, what your departure plans are or where and when you are going to arrive and which route you are going to take, not doing this could be fatal, even if you do land safely somewhere in between.Never! fly without an EPIRB.. you have absolutely no idea how hard it is to see a downed machine from the air, you reckon they're hard to see in the air, the same thing applies to on the ground, even when they are on their side [EPIRBS of the old style are being phased out and will soon be ignored, get a new one before your next flight - the new models have an attached GPS or are dual frequency, making your recovery much more quick]. If you are injured or your radio is damaged an EPIRB will be the fastest way for you to be found unless someone saw where you went down, use it wisely. I would suggest that if you are trapped, injured, have broken or sprained limbs, a bad headache or blood coming out of anywhere, use it immediately as you may not know how quickly you might deteriorate, certainly if your machine is a wreck and you feel the same don't hesitate, time is of the essence and it may be the little time you have left. Only if you can walk and talk and you feel just fine, don't use it unless you know you are hopelessly too far from any other help.If you have petrol on your clothes, take them off, it will give you a chemical burn.If you have to abandon your machine you will be hundreds of times harder to find, stick with it if you can, you may even have to burn it if you have to attract attention, though I suggest extreme caution in such a desperate measure, don't burn yourself as well. A mixture of sump oil, petrol and a tyre would be a better choice over the whole machine unless it is beyond redemption, even then, you may have to ration the parts to burn to keep a fire going if you find yourself in a remote place. From Wal Flaks - carry a mirror - use it to attract attention. If you do leave your gyro, try leave a note to say what your intentions are, where you are heading, etc. Take your phone [mobiles use 000 or 112 for emergency calls], radio, take your compass / GPS /maps and everything that will give you a sense of direction. Know how to navigate using the sun. Head for water because if you don't have any you may die of thirst, obviously salt water is not a good idea.. If there is a road in use nearby go there, pull up in a shady place and do the obvious to attract attention.Don't fly in shorts, if you have an out landing you may have to walk home through a field of thistles, not at all enjoyable ... ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ad nauseum, then you have to pull them out. The same goes for footwear. Take your helmet, you may need it to cover your head in the burning sun, take your jacket, it can be cold at night and you can wave it to attract attention.Don't try to take off again if you're hurt, if you're hurt, most likely so too is the machine, this means you are both impaired - use your EPIRB, you're more likely to be found and arrive safer.Never! fly without a radio, unless you are purely doing circuits around the strip. A radio will assist on your recovery should you have to do an outlanding, you can guide people that can't see you to your position, you will be very hard to see from the air.Don't go on a SAR without a good radio with good reception, if you can't hear directions properly you won't find what you are looking for as quickly.A SAR is more effective from 300', as things are easier to see from 300 than they are from 500, fly safely though, never into the lee of a hill.Do know where you are at all times, if you don't you'll be harder to find if you go down, a GPS is a beautiful thing.. a GPS and a radio is even better. There is more, but you'll have to wait.Nicholas TomlinAlarmist - www.alarmist.com.au - we scare for you

Good stuff there Nick !!Really, today, the minimum stuff you should travel with is a ELT, radio, GPS and matches !! You can take more stuff like a signal mirror, water, space blanket, sat phone, warm clothes, first aid kit, emergency kit of a Leatherman tool, fishing line and hooks, emergency rations [Mars bars ] and the list goes on and on, YOU, the pilot in command, must make the correct decision for the flight intended.....and the gyro being powerfull eough to carry all the stuff !!!BrianPooncarie NSW

Here"s another thing in the "what not to do" list:When loading up your truck with gear and on encountering resistance - don"t force the load - it will give all of a sudden and you might just do what I did:The threaded rod you see was embedded in my hand to the depth you see on the photo.. how did it get there?Me being stupid of course, I usually injure myself when I"m not taking the due care, I was putting a conduit back in the truck and was pissed off with it not going back in, shoved it and then of course it did go in, waiting just beside it was the end of a long speed bore that I made up, waiting for me to be this stupid... it didn"t miss the chance to teach me not to be stupid, as you can see it got me good. The sequence of events there after was:say "eyaaah" loudly,Pull the threaded rod out... do it straight away because it doesn"t hurt so badly just yet and the removal reduces the risk the soluable 5hit on the rod from being able to dissolve into the wound, what ever stays behind was going to be there regardless..say "f*k" a dozen times while you clamp the site with your other hand to stop the bleedingopen the first aid box and grab a couple of "steri strips"tape the wound closedcurse yourself for being so stupidpack up the truck and drive to hospitalsurprise the triage nurse with the injury and the object that caused itsurprise the doctor with the absence of damage to your tendons, nerves, arteries and veins.. have the wound assessed for contamination, cleaned and sterilised..get a script for antibiotics [streptococcus and staphylococcus specific - amoxillin duo w. potasium calluvinate? and distaph, I also covered the wound over with chlorsig - chloramphenacol - an eye ointment with nasty antibiotics in it too - to kill off any chance of a surface infection], get a shot for tetanus if you can"t remember when your last one was..go home and drink beer to celebrate your pure arsiness in not doing any serious damageget it checked again - if it changes colour, goes numb, starts hurting really bad or heats up, swells up quickly or you see any redness travelling along your veins go to hospital immediately! you may have to go on an antibiotic drip to kill off any infection.keep it elevated so the static pressure of your fluids does not aggravate the swelling. So there - don"t do it - force things - it could be painfull.Cheers,Nick.

Gee,Thanks for the vote of sympathy fellas... glad PB didn"t say anything, I would"ve been totally demoralised [t.i.c]I went to the doctors again today, he kept shaking his head and saying "amazing"...I found a really good way to dress up a wound like this one, here it is:Of course - have it assessed by a doctor - a good one, get the appropriate treatment and don"t risk anything with any injury, if you are not happy with the first assessment then get another one [bones - you have proof of malpractice there - go for it!].When you have to dress it yourself - get some of that spray on bandage - clean your wound up using medi prep.squeeze a bit of chlorsig on to kill any external attacks offspray it over with some spray on bandageput one of those clear skin bandages on - like the filmsquirt some more bandage in a can on top of that, hold it down "cause it can wrinkle away.allow to dry - brilliant!Cheers,Nick.

Just a follow up on the hand incident...There is now nothing wrong with it, I"ve even got a half moon scar to add to my character.. otherwise it is perfectly functional, though it didn"t improve how well I play a violin... though probably nothing will. Now for the rest of it:The doctor I had looking at the wound is a most astute fellow, in his scanning for symptoms of early bacterial attack from the likes of Staph and Strep he checked on a couple of things - blood pressure and temperature..On his first exam he found my temp to be 37, a tad high but not adverse given the day temperature was about 40 outside in the shade.. my BP was 150 over 80... oops.. not good. I"ll admit I had a touch of the anxiety factor as I was concerned of the prospect of infection in my hand. The next exam a week later revealed much of the same thing, he was concerned, so was I, he sent me home with a BP monitor for self checking as I said I was stressed with work and the prospect of him finding it up again - the good old white coat syndrome. Here"s an email I sent to him after I did some googling:Mark,After our little consult today I got to wondering wtf the cause for this could be.. reading wikipedia can be an eye opener to say the least.I"ve not suffered these sorts of effects prior and thought it could be the medication, I did a check for side effects associated with the meds prescribed - no related ones were found..I found this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium...l_blockerafter I did a search on hypertension:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HypertensionIt then dawned on me that I"d purchased for Briony some calcium chews - I"d had about one a day over the last few days and one when I got home, in fact I"d bought them after our first consult when I went to Kincumber Pharmacy.. join the dots. The article refers to blocking the effects of calcium, calcium is the mineral responsible for increasing the pulse strength from your heart muscles - hence the higher BP, it might seem I have a sensitivity to calcium, maybe. So, I"ll stop scoffing them now won"t I? I just wonder how long it takes for the effects to wash out of your system. This means I"l have to kill dairy and lose weight no doubt, I know I"m 15kg Over, need more exercise as work is just not enough..I will still carry out the BP checks though, I tried a beer experiment - after one beer and 20 mins I had 141/81, after two beers and 50 minutes later I had 131/73@57, though the first beer was an inferior italian birra, good old aussie "Dr Coopers" did the job. Thanks for the shock.. better to wake up now than in a coffin ahead of schedule.** and the next email:Mark..Also this, crikey I"m a dickhead...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACE_inhibitorI"d had a lick of salt or two lately - that will stop."***I also discovered that both of the medications prescribed for me were sodium based antibiotics. The Di-Staph I had at one stage was a total shocker - I had one and it felt as if

good to hear that all seems well Nick. Those staph infections are very nasty, I had a bit of steel hit me on the inside of the ankle one day in the workshop home here and next day I was unable to even rest my foot on the floor, couldn"t walk so to the doc and is a staph infection, 8 weeks later, it was gone. Only good part was that I did the study part for my private pilots license !!Another what not to do !
