alan, damn good your up and flying again.i remember a few years back the bearing company, SKF i think were trying to take legal action against another party saying they were selling el-cheap-o bearings in there printed box.[ how rude] actually a few of the bearing companies were banding together to do the class action thing, also heard that from aust bearing co rep TIMKIN. sounds like maybe you might of gotten some of them. ok am i game to ask ?????????????????????????????? what about dropping out the oil at the next change and putting in gear oil and pro-ma. just as a comparision.

Tony,Plan is to drop this oil in the next 7 hours to bring the changes back onto the 25 hr schedule, filter and have a good look at it. Assuming it"s OK, I"ll run it straight for the next 25 hrs, then maybe add some stabiliser and compare. Not sure about ProMa yet. Sounds good, but has metallics in it as far as I can make out.I"m currently using Syntrans 75W85 which has similar properties to the Syntran M, just a difference in viscosity at all temps. Still working on a small quantity of the Syntran M replacement though.Waddles.

I was on the roof at work at the weekend. After 45 years the bearings in the evaporative cooler were sounding a bit noisy. Surprised that I could buy the cast iron holder for the bearing as well. Looked like the original. Thought it smart as I might have broken the old ones getting the bearings out. Those bearings had the original gob of grease for all those years. You blokes do things the hard way!(Job took forever, the shaft was a smidge bigger than the bearing. Not wanting to dismantle the rusty old set up, I had to slim the shaft

Hi AllWaddles - glad to hear you are up and flying again. After all that we have discussed it would be great to monitor the progress and condition of your gearbox and oil. I am flying out today for work and returning on the 13th, my offer to you is when I get back I would like to send you an oil analysis kit, I will cover all the costs associated with the lab processing etc. I will then post with your approval the results for all to see, all l ask is that you just take the sample as per requirement, as it seems you will be doing 25hr oil changes we should be able to build a really good history for this machine. You said that you will be changing the oil in the next few hours in order for it to realign with your 25hr service interval, we can start taking samples from the next 25hr period, I will be really interested to see how the Syntrans 75W-85 holds up as it is a little bit lighter in grade than the 75W-90 Neill recommends, the Syntrans M/Syntrans Heavy Duty as its now known is a great oil but as you have found out not to easy to come by, I will make some inquiries with the guys at Castrol and see if I can find someone in the Brisbane area who uses it in bulk and we might be able to get you a few liters. Anyways let me know how you feel about it all and if you happy to go ahead I will contact you on my return to Perth.RegardsDarren

Gidday Darren,Thanks for the offer which I"ll gladly accept. I"ll pay, afterall, it"s my problem. Publish the results? By all means. That"s what these forums are for in my opinion.I also have feelers out up here for a bulk user. Might have to go back to the distributor where I saw it and see if he can help.I can save the oil from the initial change on Monday if that will be useful. One more question/suggestion, open for all opinions. The bearing tolerences are C3 standard which is close tolerence. With the high temperature, will thermal expansion within the bearings decrease the tolerences enough to create more bearing friction and therefore temperature? Bit like a vicious circle.Waddles.

Dunno Browny. Too techo for me.Progress ....... Dropped the oil at 10 hrs to bring the routine changes back on schedule. No metallic particles noted on the magnet. Very, very small flecks of aluminium possibly from not cleaning the housing properly during overhaul, or from the new bearings being pressed in. Not worried yet as a manual puller was used together with a tapping device (soft-faced hammer). This ensured that the bearings were pulled in square with minimal aluminium residue from the housing.Serious training at the moment and the temp has not risen above 200*C. Still happy.Waddles
