What if someone set up a type of moveable Gyro training camp (to test demand)? Potential students could indicate their interest on forum (not yet). Identify an area central to a group of them. Find a suitable airfield near them. Stundents pay reasonable, but non refundable deposit(to sort out who is for real). If minimum number(to make it financially viable for instructor) sign on, then pick a date and book a block of rooms in a nearby motel. Train student. If it works for the instuctor and the students and it seems worth it, try if again with another group in another area. And if that works we can try my bestest plan. An airfield/nudie bar!!!I think Birdy's idea is great, but not everyone may have Birdy,s vision and fortitude. Maybe some thing to test the water first? It took the Ultralight boys about 5-6 years to go from laughed at to laughing. I think we can do it a lot quicker than that. Lets start now.Daryl Patterson

G'day Daryl as Ted Mentioned if any one is looking for training I would strongly suggest getting in contact with Russell Cook. Russell did the touring trainer thing twice last year, once to Innisfail to get myself and 2 others trained up as well as a couple of blokes between Innisfail and Darwin and then out to dysart a month or 2 later so there is certainly the demand out there for it. For me the closest trainer is in bunderberg and to get there and live for a week would probably have cost me just as much as the training itself. I realy appreciate what Russell did for us last year cause I and others probably wouldn't be flying if Russell hadn't hit the road.

Hi Birdy,Been reading this topic with interest. Some three years ago I had planned a program on similar lines to what you propose, started to write my thoughts on this subject for the Forum but then got a bit carried away, so have decided to submit it as an article for the Gyro News hopefully it can be included in the next issue.Art! If you read this did you get my Email.Attached is a Promo I had designed to use for advertising in magazines. There is still hope it will happen, depends what happens at the next meeting with the Lands Dept. and Council, been trying to secure the Rylstone Aerodrome for three years now, but each time we seem to be getting somewhere, they shift the goal posts. One more go, one more chance.Download Attachment:academy2.doc429 BytesJeff H-S

Jeff, that is exactly the path to follow if we are to generate constructive discussion on this issue. Pete Barsden previously stated that a Club could take up the reigns with this and practically speaking, the largest population in Oz lives along the eastern seaboard. I look forward to reading the next issue.Mike

The location of a school isnt going to suit everyone obviously and this is the big stumbling block as I see it as the biggest population areas are Vic and NSW so Queensland will feel left out and WA is going to get nothing...unless we can go with one in the east and one in the west !What SA and NT do, I'm not sure.Surely we can be more constructive than the wool industry that has wandered around the mountain in the desert moaning and groaning, stumbling along in the gutter. Despite a few name changes and and millions of dollers later, NOTHING has changed since 1989. I dont think there are two woolgrowers who can agree on ANYTHING, lets not be like them please !! Brian

Thanks for the info Maulonir, but I'm a "housewife" so I'm limited by how far I can get too (and back from) between the hours of 9:00AM and 3:30PM. The "Boss" is a career woman so she would rather have me shot than take time of work.Daryl Patterson

Micheal,What I said was that training should be done at "club level", not a particular club being a training school, yesterday myself and Adrian have started the ball rolling, the superlight club of W.A incorporates a large healthy Gyro scene, and a two place trainer will be underway, it will be a simple "no frills" unit stationed at the Bindoon airstrip, the building of this Gyroplane is expected to commence within the next two weeks in my workshop with all of our members helping out in one way or another, as I said before, just talking about it achieves nothing, you have to actually do something, and the quicker it starts the sooner an end result can be achieved.Pete Barsden

Ok Guys, been sitting back reading this one, and seems a good idea though it is in my opion doomed to fail if started.1 other thing i took the liberity to look at the instructors list one the main page and by my count there was give or take 40 instructors, either senior, assistant and the likes, so is there 40 people prepared to and able to take a new person to teach him to fly??Simple enough question and here is my reason for asking, if i was wanting to start flying a gyro, i would start to ring around the instructors in my area, now if i were down south where most of the guys are, i start to ring no. 1 and he says no sorry mate havent got a machine at the moment.no.2 says no mate wont be able to get out to the strip for about 6 weeks, work commitments , ok fair enough.no.3 says mate i sold my gyro 2 years ago not doing it any more....Can any one see some thing wrong here, how many times is someone going to keep ringing, i bet if i rang a GA training guy i would be flooded with paperwork in a couple of days, i know cause i've done it...Ok my point is why not only list the guys who are prepared and able to train, as this is not the professional look i would have thought we should take... Just my two bobs worthrotorcraft.com.au

Bones and Butch,Valid points, but, consider this...Gyro's require some patience to learn, so the seemingly non professional behaviour acts as a filter to deter people who might be in too much of a hurry to learn slowly..Cheers,Nick.

Bones, you raise a good point re the instructors listed. There are a few there that while they are instructors [and damm good instructors] because of changed commitments, arent available to instruct at this time so those instructors really should be put on an 'inactive list' till they indicate they are ready to instruct. This would then make it muxh easier for the prospective student to find an instructor easily. Also, the location of each instructor should be listed as well. This would also help !!Brian
