Keep up all the suggestions chaps. I try all of them, got to crack it one day. Yes Russ iv"e got a landing and strobe light. I"ll try that one tomorrow. Today I removed the LH cam cover and checked the tappets, seems ok. Still bearing in mind a hydrolic lifter could be over pushing. I did a cyl. leakage test today. No. 4 was a bit leaking more than the rest but the compressions are all the same so I don"t see much relevance in that test.

Just ran a jump lead from the ecu to no. 4 inj. (disconnecting old loom) -- made no difference. Checked signals to all injectors. Oscilloscope has a frequency meter. No 1 - 2 and 3 is 17 hz. and no. 4 is 35 hz. at 2000 rpm.Can you get hold of a car to run this test also. Perhaps if the car runs 17 all round then this anomaly may be what you are looking to solve??

Prob is max........soob car elecs, are someway shape or form linked through the pewtar system.......your gyro ain"t. If you could identify which "pin" on your pewtar,is your lights "pin".........bingo.....connect bulb to it, drain power. But it ain"t your pewtar causing grief............got a feeling in me bones re that. Don"t mind hooking it into my gyro just to confirm it"s Ok if you wish.cheers.....russ

max, how did you manage to get an engine with only 24,000 k on it ? had the owner [ if you knew him/her] had any problems with it.??? just thinking back now rob p and brian were building gyros and had engines for there own and brian had some spares. i know he had the computer wiring sorted [ or so i had been told ] but after he died rob was finishing off the machines and one had near on the same problem. [ i"m fairly sure it was a 2 lt sports engine thou ] it had a bad miss, inconsistant, and really only above 4000 rpm. i went with him in it once to [act as balast] and to look back at a fuel pressure guage on the engine. after that i believe he was changing 1 wire at a time trying to sort the problem. i"m not sure where he ended up doing about the problem. i know he said he was missing brian to solve the problem. he used to lurk but i haven"t been out there for a while but maybe worth a call???

Max, just confirming that you have swapped the injector rails left to right and left the wiring in the same positions?"The injectors have been swapped left side to right side. the problem remains on no.4 "How did you confirm this? (#4 still giving 35hz)?While running a new years eve fireworks show I spoke to one of my crew who is an auto sparkie and recounted your story. He reminded me that there is a cold start sequence where the ECU will richen the mixture while the engine temp sensor is below a certain value. (as opposed to the engine coolant temperature). But that should happen to ALL of the sensors otherwise rough running will occur. Chook.PS. attached pic of what we can do to the errant item once we find it! ;D

I purchased a 2004 subaru that had been rolled end 4 end dodging a lizard up the stewart H/W (was at the right place at the right time) - woman driver - I have swapped two RH injectors with LH with same results. I have even hooked a rheostat into the temp. sender circuit and tricked the ECU into believing the engine was hot. (still scratching my head)

I"m hoping Bryan will drop in from the "other side" and lend a hand.

The oscilloscope is a TDS1002 Tektronic two channel. The good news is I"ve found the user manual and second channel test probes and am highly motivated to study the manual and become an efficient user of this test equipment. I want to get this old girl back up in the sky

Max TDS1002 - you lucky bast@rd. Are you able to compensate the probes using "probe check wizard"? I assume so as you have given me frequency readings. In fact just contact me if you need to on 0429 373404.Now what I anticipate doing is comparing the feeds and waveshapes to -injectors (at the injector), coils (at the low volt sides) and the crank case position sensor. To keep everything simple, use channel 1 as the probe on a "good" test point and set that trace at the top of the screen (posn knob). Remember to always set your VOLTS/Div reasonably high and work back down to see the waveshape and avoid OVERLOADING the input ccts. Adjust your HORIZONTAL adjust so that you have at least 1 full pulse or event displayed and it is stable (relatively).Ok now same settings on channel 2 and place the probe at the same location that you have the probe on Ch 1 at but on the suspect component. You may have to adjust the horizontal to capture this second trace because it will be either before or after your reference channel simply

Max, can you give me the part number of your ECU please. Everything that can identify it.I am in contact with a Norwegian Subaru tech specialist in Norway. It may be Aussie specific and may have differing software so EVERYTHING that is printed on it will help.A picture maybe?Regards.....Chook.
